Multi-Genre Literacy Autobiography

I knew from the first day of class that this would be a fun assignment! After our very first class, I went home and compiled tons of pictures for my presentation. At times, it was difficult to remember all of the books that I loved when I was younger, so I called my grandma for a little help! When I was younger, my grandma worked at a children's bookstore on weekends (she was a special education teacher for Akron Public Schools during the week). She remembered ALL of the books that I loved when I was younger, but there were so many that I could not include even half of them!

I would love to do this with students. I think this fun project will do for them what it did for me: -Allow me to recognize what shaped my tastes, recognize how literacy has impacted my life, look appreciate pop culture currently and how it affected my childhood, to take suggestions from other students' presentations, and to appreciate/ explore the diverse tastes and favorites among students.

Here are some books that my grandma reminded me of that I did not include:

  1. OH MY GOODNESS! I forgot all about the book Sam's Sandwich. I used to read that all the time. It was a pop-up book! I am so upset I forgot to put this in my presentation.

I think it would be a good idea if teachers required students to make a list of all the books they have read throughout their literary career. Even though this probably would not include pop-up books, it would be nice to have to reflect back on. It would also provide a sense of achievement for students. They could say “Look! I have read all of these books.” I believe I read about this in Classics in the Classroom by Carol Jago. The high school where she taught requires students to make a cumulative list throughout their high school career.

Don't you wish you had a list of all the books you have read now?

You should thank your grandma for all the help she gave you on your presentation. I will admit, my mom remembered quite a few as well. This project could potentially bring up some great discussions at the dinner table.

  2. Marissa,

Of course I thanked my Grandma, but she loved helping! She loves to read, too. She keeps a word document on her laptop that lists EVER SINGLE BOOK SHE'S READ SINCE COLLEGE. She started writing the list when she graduated, but she included some things that she read in high school. When she got her first computer, she typed it up and made it into a document. Now, it is a long list! She writes the name of the book by the number, a brief description of it, and how much she liked it on a scale of 1-5. I have started this, too. I have tried to include everything from high school on, but it is hard for me to remember everything. I'd be happy to show you my list, anytime!
